The harmony that reigns between the grape varieties and the terroirs* on which they are grown, where diversity combines with singularity, is all the more exceptional when you consider that while some of the region’s great varieties are native to the Loire Valley, many others actually originated in the East and South West of France.

The originality and uniqueness of all Loire Valley wines lies in the fact that for the most part they are made from a single grape variety:
Chenin, Cabernet and Gamay in Anjou, Saumur and Touraine Sauvignon and Pinot Noir in the Touraine and Centre areas, but also Grolleau, Pinot Meunier, Pineau d’Aunis and Romorantin.
This selection of grape varieties is unique in the world, opening the door to an extremely diverse and highly expressive range of wines.

*Terroir is a French word for which there is no exact equivalent in the English language. In its most limited sense, it means soil, but when referring to wine, it refers to the entire natural environment of each production area (climate, hours of sunshine, soil make-up, altitude,etc.) and so can differ from one vineyard to another, and even from one row of vines to another!
