The Loire: a mosaic of terroirs

From the Armorican Massif to the Massif Central via the Parisian basin, the Loire is a patchwork of terroirs where each soil and climate give their character to the wines.

Granite, schist, limestone, alluvium... so many mineral features that, combined with a weather pattern with multiple influences, shape an exceptional viticultural diversity.

Soils with a thousand faces

One of the Loire's greatest assets is its extraordinary geological mosaic. This diversity directly influences the expression of grape varieties and the typicity of wines.

  • The rocks of the Massif Armoricain (Nantes, western Anjou): gneiss, micaschists, granites and volcanic rocks give rise to lively, taut Muscadets and deep, elegant Cabernet Francs.
  • The schists and tuffeau of Anjou-Saumur: these soils give Chenin chiseled, mineral wines, perfect for the great vintages of Saumur, Savennières and Coteaux du Layon.
  • The sands and flinty clays of Touraine: they exalt the aromas of Sauvignon Blanc and structure the reds of Chinon and Bourgueil.
  • The limestones and alluvium of Haut-Poitou: an ideal soil for expressive white wines and supple, fruity reds.
  • the flint clays and a few grooves of tuffeau form the cradle of the Vallée du Loir. A confidential setting to discover.

A climate shaped by the Loire

The Loire, Europe's last wild river, plays a fundamental role in the thermal regulation of vineyards. Its tributaries and relief generate a multitude of microclimates conducive to vine-growing.

At Nantes or in Anjou, the oceanic influence and its mild winters, temperate summers and low thermal amplitude are ideal conditions for fresh, balanced wines.

The semi-oceanic climate of Saumurois and western Touraine where the hills protect from prevailing winds and favor optimal ripening, particularly for dry and sweet Chenin.

InTouraine or Haut Poitou, the thermal amplitude and marked sunshine of the continental influence produce fuller-bodied reds and aromatic, precise whites.

Terroir-varietal harmony: the key to Loire expression

Each Loire terroir highlights a specific grape variety that finds its full expression there:

  • The Melon Blanc on the granites and gneisses of Muscadet
  • The Chenin Blanc on the tuffeau and schists of Anjou-Saumur
  • The Sauvignon Blanc on Touraine flint clays
  • The Cabernet Franc on Chinon and Saumur limestones and alluvium

A heritage to preserve
