Sauvignon Blanc
Sauvignon blanc: a grape variety emblematic of Loire white wines
A grape variety with character at the heart of Loire wines
Sauvignon blanc is a grape variety emblematic of white wines of the Loire Valley, where it expresses all the richness of an exceptional terroir and the diversity of a French vineyard recognized the world over.
Rising from the lands of Gironde and Bordeaux, this dry white grape variety flourishes fully in the Loire Valley, shaped by the Loire and its tributaries. It has conquered the hillsides of the Loire, from Sancerre to Pouilly-Fumé, via Menetou-Salon, Quincy, Reuilly or Touraine, offering fresh, lively and aromatic white wines, among the most prized in France and internationally.
The world's second-largest wine-growing region for Sauvignon Blanc, the Loire Valley reveals its purest nuances: from the hillsides of the Touraine vineyards to the slopes of the Centre-Loire, to the terroirs of the Haut-Poitou vineyards, where each cuvée recounts the unique encounter between the Sauvignon Blanc grape and the Loire.

What is Sauvignon blanc?
Original to southwestern France, the Sauvignon grape has found the Loire an ideal place to express itself. Its presence in the region goes back a long way, particularly in eastern Touraine, where today it forms the link between the great Loire territories.
A fragile and demanding grape variety, it adapts to the temperate and semi-continental climates that characterize the Loire. Soils of chalk, limestone and flinty clay enable it to express all its finesse and typicity.
Characteristics of Sauvignon blanc
Aromas and taste profile
Sauvignon blanc is a lively, expressive grape variety whose aromatic palette ranges from floral notes (hawthorn, broom) to white-fleshed fruit and citrus (lemon, grapefruit, passion fruit).
On flinty terroirs, such as Pouilly-Fumé or Sancerre, it develops a subtle minerality, sometimes referred to as a "flinty note".
On the palate, the wines are dry, taut and well-balanced, carried by a natural acidity that is the hallmark of Loire white wines: a sensation of persistent freshness, enhanced by a crystalline finish, ideal for lovers of dry, aromatic white wines.
Color and robe
The robe, a pale yellow with green highlights, reflects its youth and vivacity. Over time, it softens to golden hues, accompanied by riper notes of honey and candied fruit. This light hue reflects the freshness and youthfulness of the grape variety, emblematic of Loire white wines.
Serving and storage temperature
Served between 8 and 10°C, Sauvignon blanc reveals all its freshness, tension and fruity aromas. When young, it's seductive in its liveliness; after a few years, it gains in roundness and develops riper, honeyed notes. While the majority of cuvées can be enjoyed young, some expressions from limestone terroirs, notably in Touraine or Menetou-Salon, gain in roundness and can be kept for 3 to 5 years, or even longer depending on the vintage.

Major Loire appellations producing Sauvignon blanc
Sauvignon Blanc is found in many of the Loire Valley's leading appellations, each offering it a different expression:
- Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé, where it becomes chiseled, fine and mineral;
- Quincy, Reuilly and Menetou-Salon, renowned for their elegant, fruity wines;
- Touraine, Touraine Oisly, Touraine Chenonceaux and Valençay, offering rounder, more generous profiles;
Haut-Poitou, to the south, where it gains in fullness, freshness and charm.
These appellations, recognized among the great white wines of the Loire, illustrate the diversity of a Loire terroir shaped by geology, climate and the hand of man.
Wine and food pairing with Sauvignon blanc
Sauvignon Blanc is the ideal companion for seafood: oysters, shellfish or grilled fish. Its freshness enhances the salinity and finesse of the flesh.
It also pairs wonderfully with Loire Valley goat cheeses: Crottin de Chavignol, Valençay, Sainte-Maure-de-Touraine, where milky flavors meet its natural vivacity.
More surprisingly, it also accompanies world cuisines: Thai dishes, lemongrass, fresh herbs or sushi. Its intense aromatic expression matches fresh, tangy or slightly spicy dishes.

Why choose cooperatives
The Loire cooperatives embody the collective spirit of the vineyards: they guarantee exemplary traceability, a fair price, and the enhancement of terroirs. By choosing a wine from a cooperative, you're supporting committed winemakers who join forces to produce accessible, authentic wines that represent the diversity of the Loire.
Sauvignon blanc versus other white grape varieties
In the Loire, Sauvignon blanc rubs shoulders with historic grape varieties such as Chenin blanc and Chardonnay.
More lively and aromatic than Chenin, more crystalline than Chardonnay, it stands out for its aromatic intensity and mineral tension.
Where Chenin lends itself to sweet and sparkling wines, Sauvignon embodies the freshness and precision of Loire dry white wines.
This personality makes it a model the world over: from Bordeaux to New Zealand (Marlborough), from Italy to South Africa, Sauvignon blanc inspires and reinvents itself, but it is indeed on the banks of the Loire that it finds its purest expression.
